Farley’s Ford mission

Written by Mehul Brahmbhatt on Mar 17th, 2008 | Filed under: Ford Trucks, Vehicles

Led Zeppelin’s back together. Stagflation and high gas prices have made a comeback as well. And late next year, you’ll be able to complete a 1970s revival with a two-door car that’s all business up front and party out back.

Answering the wishes of fervent fans — and the fears of some critics — General Motors Corp. was to unveil today its plans for a revival of the Chevy El Camino car-truck as a 2010 model Pontiac hot rod. The “sport truck” doesn’t have a name yet; GM will run a contest over the next month asking for submissions at a Pontiac Web site www.pontiac.com/namethiscar, and announce the winner April 15.

Here’s one: “Australiaino.”

Based on the same underpinnings as the G8 sedan and upcoming Chevrolet Camaro, the un-Camino will be built in Australia, where GM has centered engineering efforts for rear-wheel drive cars. It’s a risky strategy for GM, as Australian-built models have never sold well in the United States, and a weaker U.S. dollar threatens the business case for any imports.

But without its Australian arm, GM would not likely have enough resources to give Pontiac new models.

In addition to the mini-truck, GM also was to unveil today a version of the G8 sedan with the Corvette’s 402-horsepower engine that is to come to showrooms in the next year.

Australia has the longest history with so-called utes, since they were invented there by a Ford engineer in 1934 who got the idea from a farmer seeking one vehicle for church on Sundays and the pig market on Mondays. Ford brought the idea to the United States in the late 1950s, and GM followed, with the Chevrolet El Camino growing to define the segment.

GM’s U.S. production peaked in 1973 at nearly 72,000 El Caminos and GMC Caballeros. By the early 1980s, tighter fuel rules for cars had made small pickups more competitive, and GM ended production in 1988.

And by then, the El Camino and its ilk had become a punch line. President Bill Clinton told workers at GM’s Louisiana truck plant in 1994 that he owned an El Camino in the ’70s: “It was a real sort of Southern deal. I had Astroturf in the back. You don’t want to know why, but I did.”

Abandoned in the United States — save for some unsuccessful stabs at a comeback such as the Subaru Baja — the utility market flourished in Australia, where Ford and GM’s Holden have continued to build several models.

The G8-based vehicle will come only with the 361-horsepower V8 offered in the G8 GT paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. It will haul more than 1,000 pounds and tow 3,500 pounds — as much as some small pickups.

Rising gas prices tip of the iceberg for truckers

Written by Mehul Brahmbhatt on Mar 13th, 2008 | Filed under: Latest News, Latest News, Vehicles

Rising gas prices are leaving some local truckers with nothing — no job, no rig and no home.

“I know two guys who took money out of their homes to buy trucks and now they are losing both,” said Tom Holden, owner-operator of Holden Trucking in Hesperia. “Unfortunately, it’s not uncommon.”

Holden, who has been in business for some 16 years, said his fuel costs were about $7,000 a month and jumped to $11,000 in the past few months.

“When companies pay 32 cents per mile and some older trucks get something like two miles to the gallon, the cost of fuel is more than the load pays,” said Dave Green, a mobile truck mechanic from Hesperia.

He added that some of the newer, lower-emission trucks get worse gas mileage than the ones built around 2005.
Skyrocketing gas prices are just one of the many problems facing the trucking industry, said Julie Sauls, spokesperson for the California Trucking Association. New environmental bills are pushing many truckers to flee the state while they still can experts said.

“At this moment I am keeping watch on 80 bills that can impact the trucking industry,” Sauls said.

The San Pedro Area Clean Air Action Plan may make the biggest impact, Sauls said.

According to the San Pedro plan, trucks need to make certain changes in order to meet environmental and air quality guidelines, including having to purchase either new lower-emission trucks or making modifications to existing trucks.

Many see this as a difficult balancing act.

“When you try to solve the environmental problem, which does have to be addressed, people don’t realize that it’s trucks that drive the food into the markets,” said Eddie Moreno, co-owner of Quality Driver Solutions, a driver-recruitment center in Ontario.

The CTA is working every day to strike a good balance between reducing emissions and transporting goods, said Sauls. Some of those efforts include California’s use of ultra-low sulfur fuel for almost a decade and traveling at more fuel-efficient speeds.

The ultimate increase in price in passed onto the consumer, said Sauls.

“This is the worst I have ever seen it in 19 years in the business,” said Green.

“Coupled with diesel prices topping off at more than $4 a gallon, some of the owners are finding it harder to conduct business and are operating on a thinner margin,” Sauls said.

The price of diesel in California has also impacted out-of-state drivers.

“We don’t fuel up in California,” said Robert Schaefer of Oklahoma. Other long-haul truckers share Schaefer’s sentiments.

“The big problem is that we don’t get any of that increase, the company doesn’t see the money. It all lines the pockets of those oil mongrels,” said Lisa Serrao of Arizona.

PACCAR Trucks Melbourne has achieved the highest recognition possible for DAF truck dealers in Australia by winning the 2007 DAF Dealer of the Year Award.

Winning the award is testament to its focus on growing DAF’s presence in the Melbourne market.

Andrew Kneebone, General Manager, Retail Operations for PACCAR Trucks Melbourne, says he is thrilled to win the award, which recognises excellence in overall dealer performance, truck sales, parts sales and customer support.

“It is great to be recognised for our DAF sales and customer service efforts. DAF is a premium European brand – and with good reason. It operates from 8am to 11pm Monday to Friday, as well as Saturdays until 6pm. A 24-hour breakdown and emergency parts service provides peace of mind for their customers.

Toyota to introduce diesel pickup, minivan in U.S. market

Written by Mehul Brahmbhatt on Jan 23rd, 2008 | Filed under: Latest News, Latest News, Vehicles

Toyota Motor Corp. (7203.TO) said Sunday that it will introduce diesel-engine models in the U.S. market in an effort to offer low-emission vehicles.

The Japanese car maker will also roll out plug-in gasoline-electric hybrids with lithium-ion batteries in the U.S. by 2010.

Toyota will launch the Tundra pickup truck and the Sequoia minivan, which will be powered by a new diesel V8 engine, “in the near future,” Toyota President Katsuaki Watanabe said Sunday.

Other Japanese car makers also said earlier in the day at the North American International Auto Show that they want to bring in diesel-powered vehicles in the U.S. as regulations for gas emissions are becoming stricter and gasoline prices remain high. Diesel engines are about 20% more fuel efficient than gasoline engines.

Honda Motor Co.  President Takeo Fukui said that it will launch diesel vehicles under its luxury Acura brand by 2009.

Toyota, which is the world’s leading gasoline-electric hybrid car maker, will also show two all new, dedicated hybrids, one for Toyota and one for Lexus, next year, Watanabe said.

2008 Detroit Auto Show: 2009 Kia Borrego

Written by Mehul Brahmbhatt on Jan 14th, 2008 | Filed under: Vehicles

 * Competes with: Chevy TrailBlazer, Ford Explorer and other such endangered species
* Looks like: Unfrozen Dr. Evil came up with the product plan
* Drivetrain: 262-hp V-6 with five-speed automatic or 300-plus-hp 4.6-liter V-8 with six-speed automatic; 3.0-liter clean-diesel V-6 to come
* Hits dealerships: Summer 2008

I went to the Kia display at the Detroit auto show to see what had to be an outstanding all-new midsize truck-based SUV. It would have to be outstanding, I thought, because there could be no other explanation as to why an automaker would introduce a truck-based SUV in 2008. All I had to do was enter Detroit Hall, pass the Jaguar and Land Rover exhibits and travel back in time more than 10 years.

There I heard Kia Motors America president Len Hunt talk about catering to buyers with “active lifestyles” and celebrating the company’s first-ever V-8 engine and navigation system. The model in question was not, it turned out, a 1999. It was the 2009 Borrego, which on closer inspection turned out to be a perfectly serviceable seven-seat SUV — but possibly the worst product decision I’ve seen in years. Kia has made one smart move after another in the 21st century, even introducing a low-cost-alternative minivan that went toe-to-toe with the class leaders in most areas. Bringing a truck like this to market while the rest of the industry is scrambling to get out of it just doesn’t strike me as a good move.

It’s not all old-school, though. The Borrego offers power-adjustable pedals, a rear sonar system and backup camera, and a six-speed automatic transmission for use with the 300-plus-horsepower V-8. The base engine is a 3.8-liter V-6, and buyers have a choice of rear- or four-wheel drive. The most modern thing about this model is the promise of a clean-diesel engine option. Asked when this engine would become available, Hunt said only that it would be in the model’s first generation. Off to the side of the display, a cutaway 3.0-liter V-6 diesel promised 247 hp and 398 pounds-feet of torque beginning in 2010. Towing capacities aren’t given yet for this engine, but the V-6 is claimed to pull 5,000 pounds and the V-8 is good for 7,500.

To be fair, the truck itself has a lot to recommend it. It’s not stunning to look at, but it has a relatively high-quality interior with roomy first- and second-row seats, plus a serviceable third row for kids. Safety features abound, including two-stage front airbags, side curtain airbags for all three rows of seats, antilock disc brakes, an electronic stability system with traction control and offroad aids like downhill assist control and hill assist control. There’s also the generous Kia warranty.

It’s possible so many manufacturers will get out of the truck-based-SUV business that there will be a decent market for trucks like this one. Until such a time, the Borrego will make good use of its hill assist control; it’s going to be an uphill climb.

Toyota Cruises Towards First Place

Written by Mehul Brahmbhatt on Dec 27th, 2007 | Filed under: Latest News, Latest News, Vehicles

Toyota Motor, whose small, fuel-efficient vehicles are reaping the benefits of soaring gas prices, raised its 2008 forecast to 9.85 million in vehicle sales, despite fears of a slowdown in its key U.S. market.

Toyota’s forecasts could put it ahead of General Motors, the world’s largest automaker by vehicle sales. General Motors hasn’t given a forecast for next year, but estimated 9.2 million in vehicle sales in 2007. In 1978, the U.S. automaker created an unbeaten record when it sold 9.55 million units.

As demand slows down in the U.S. and European markets, global automakers are counting on markets like India, China and Russia, where rising incomes are leading to high growth rates. Toyota Motor opened a factory in St. Petersburg last week and estimates a 25% rise in Russia sales next year.

Toyota, the maker of models like the Camry and Prius hybrids, estimated 2.27 million in vehicle sales in its home market of Japan and 7.58 million in overseas sales for the next year. In Asia excluding Japan, the company is looking at a 20% increase in sales, compared with a 1% rise in the United States.

“At the beginning of the year, we wondered if the total auto market would reach 8 million, and by mid-year we were looking at 8.5 million. Now it’s possible the market will exceed 9 million. We need to figure out how to meet demand,” President Katsuaki Watanabe told media in Nagoya, Japan.

Last month, Toyota reported an 11% increase in profits for its second quarter. For 2008, the company is budgeting for global production of 9.95 million units, up 5% from this year’s level.

“We think these are achievable numbers and take a positive stance on them,” Citigroup said in a research note. “Toyota’s range abounds in fuel-efficient vehicles and it was also ahead of the pack in commercializing mass-produced hybrids. It is also boosting diesel engines in alliance with Isuzu Motors. We like the way it is set to play to its strengths in expanding earnings by bringing to mass production vehicles with superior gas mileage in 2008 and beyond,” said analyst Noriyuki Matsushima.

For the first nine months of this year, Toyota sold 7.05 million vehicles sold worldwide, barely trailing General Motors’ tally of 7.06 million. The final numbers for the year will be out in January.

Goldman Sachs said in an analyst note that while the company’s U.S. and Japan targets were ambitious for next year, overall sales could come in at more than 10 million vehicles.

Toyota’s shares rose 1.3% on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Wednesday, closing at 6,180 yen ($54.14). Later in New York, its American depositary receipts, which represent two Japanese shares, gained 1.5%, or $1.62, to $108.56, equivalent to 6,197 yen in Tokyo.

Guangzhou Toyota unveils 2008 sales target

Written by Mehul Brahmbhatt on Dec 26th, 2007 | Filed under: Latest News, Latest News, Trucking News, Vehicles

Guangzhou Toyota Motor Co., Ltd (GTMC), Toyota’s second joint venture in China, aims to increase its sales target by 17% in 2008, powered by launching new models and the expansion of output capacity, market sources reported.

GTMC estimates a projected sales volume of 210,000 vehicles next year, including 175,000 units of Camry premier sedan and 35,000 Yaris hatchback, which are scheduled to sell nationwide in the middle of 2008.

Driven by soaring demand in premier class segment, the company raised its sales target twice to 170,000 units this year. The sales of Camry, the only model of GTMC in the mid-to-high segment, beat Honda’s Accord as the year’s best selling model, and reported a total sale of 153,000 units for the first 11 months.

Yuan Zhongrong, the executive vice president of Guangzhou Toyota, expected the competition in the premier class segment to be much more intense next year compared to this year.

Its rival Honda will begin to sell new Accord tomorrow, with an expected sales volume of 185,000 units next year. In response, Toyota is planning to launch Yaris hatchback, the Japanese car maker’s global model, and to expand its dealership network to 180 stores.

Toyota, a leading car maker from Japan, has added capacity and is actively launching new models to grab bigger market share. In line with its expansion in China, the company expects to take a 10% market share on mainland by 2010, up 5% from last year.
