Nissan U.S. commercial truck news

Nissan U.S. commercial truck

Nissan is reportedly going to show their light commercial vehicle (or vehicles), otherwise known as LCV(s), at the next Detroit auto show in January. As has been reported, Nissan plans on introducing three LCVs in the United States within the next few years. One is expected to be a van, quite possibly based on their Primastar van (pictured), which is sold in many other markets worldwide. If so, it’s most direct competitor here would the the Dodge/Freightliner Sprinter vans, which have proven so popular with delivery services and tradesmen.

As to the other two LCVs? Nothing certain has been announced to date, but there’s certainly a lot of speculating going on. One such speculation centers around a heavy duty pickup (Nissan truck news), which I think is a pretty safe bet. The big question is, will it be a Detroit-style pickup, fashioned along the lines of the very successful Ford Duper Duty? Or will it be more of an “international style” of truck? By that I mean a vehicle that is totally unlike that coming from the domestic truckmakers. Perhaps something like the Primastar, but with a pickup bed and/or dump body instead? That leaves the third truck up for grabs. A small box van perhaps? Almost certainly these trucks will be diesel-powered.

Big rig may be five times safer than your car

Written by Mehul Brahmbhatt on May 8th, 2008 | Filed under: Big Rigs

How safe is that truck next to you? The true answer is very safe.

Big rigs account for 17 per cent of all road miles, and only three per cent of fatalities.

This means the average big rig is five times safer than the average vehicle on the road.

Most truck drivers are dedicated professionals who take pride in their safe driving and the proper condition of their trucks.

Inspectors target trucks that they think are more likely to fail an inspection, recognizing that most trucks will pass easily.

Most of those trucks that are “ordered off the road” are merely ordered to replace a burned-out sidelight or to correct some other minor fault, and are not found to have unsafe mechanical condition.

Truckers Keeping Their Big Rigs Parked

Truckers are once again protesting the high cost of fuel. Last month, many of them tried to drive home the point to congress, some are doing it again.

This time it’s on a local level. More than a dozen drivers parked their big rigs in Vanceboro to send a message to lawmakers about the high cost of diesel fuel.

They say they’re losing profits and emptying their wallets to fill up their tanks.

Levis Lane has been a truck driver for almost 30 years and he says this is the worst he’s ever seen.

Levis says he spends more than eight hundred dollars filling up his tank. Other drivers tell us they’ve spent as much as 12 hundred dollars on diesel fuel.

2007 Chevrolet Avalanche LT

Written by Mehul Brahmbhatt on May 6th, 2008 | Filed under: Latest News, Trucking News

2007 Chevrolet Avalanche LT 4WD’s strength and weakness is that it tries to be “All things to all men” (First Corinthians). Indeed, the 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche LT 4WD comes well equipped at a base price of $35,295 ($47,730 as tested), with a 3 year/36,000 mile basic warranty, a 5 year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty and an EPA estimate of 15 mpg city/20 mpg highway. Can Avalanche cause a landslide of opinion?

First Glance at the Chevy Avalanche

For 2007, the armor is gone, and Avalanche looks leaner, more athletic and just plain cooler than before. Beauty is more than skin deep in this case. Avalanche now rides on the new GMT900 platform, the same architecture that underlies the 2007 Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon and Sierra, and Chevrolet Tahoe and Silverado, among other GM offerings. There’s something about the proportions of the half pickup/half SUV that always throws me — kind of like when you see a Welsh Corgi running at the dog park. It looks like a real dog, but where’s the rest of it? Avalanche looks like a pickup, but where’s the rest of the bed? After the initial sense of imbalance, Avalanche starts to make sense, especially once you start driving it and using it.

Fit and finish on Avalanche is very good, with rich paint and subtle, firmly attached trim pieces. Big headlights and taillights do a good job of making the truck highly visible, as did my test vehicle’s Sunburst Orange Metallic paint job.

Slow sales, parts shortage affect GM plant in Texas

Written by Mehul Brahmbhatt on May 2nd, 2008 | Filed under: Latest News, Trucking News

Weak demand for full-size sport utility vehicles and a shortage of critical parts have forced General Motors to lay off second-shift workers at an assembly plant in Arlington, Texas.Workers at the GM assembly plant in Janesville, who also build the big SUVs, learned Monday that the automaker would cut the local plant’s second shift in July. The result will be the loss of at least 750 jobs.

While the second-shift cut in Janesville is permanent, the Arlington cut will be for next week only.

All Arlington workers are in the third and final week of a three-week layoff tied to the United Auto Workers strike against American Axle, which supplies GM with axles and other parts for SUVs and pickup trucks. First-shift workers in Arlington will resume production next week while second-shifters will continue on lay off.

The Arlington plant, which has about 2,400 hourly workers, builds Chevrolet Suburbans and Tahoes and GMC Yukon XLs and Yukons. About 2,600 hourly employees also make those four vehicles in Janesville.

But Arlington workers also build Cadillac Escalades, Escalade ESVs and the two-mode hybrid versions of Tahoes and Yukons.

A GM spokesman said Tuesday that Arlington’s wider product mix was the reason it avoided the permanent second-shift cut that landed on the Janesville plant.

The Arlington plant has ranked consistently higher than Janesville in the annual Harbour Report on plant productivity.

Enrique “JR” Flores Jr., president of UAW Local 276 that represents hourly workers at the Arlington plant, told the Dallas Morning News: “We’re happy we have what we’ve got.

“We’re also saddened about what happened at Janesville. But we understand

Enid Mack Sales enjoying a new boom in business

Written by Mehul Brahmbhatt on May 2nd, 2008 | Filed under: Mack trucks

Enid Mack Sales, Inc., is in it for the long haul, and according to Troy Phillips, president, it’s due to a close-knit community of clients and employees.

“This hasn’t ever been a one-man show,” Phillips said. “We’ve had many good long-time employees and friends who have helped us survive in this business for so long.”

The company was established in September 1976 by L.E. “Les” Phillips, and has remained a stand-alone, independent dealer since then.

“We’ve remained family-owned and operated,” Phillips said. “We’ve been able to create a niche in a market that tends to fall to bigger dealers.”

Enid Mack Sales is an authorized Mack dealer, one of three in Oklahoma. They sell both new and used Mack trucks, as well as trailers. In 2007, Phillips said they sold 125 trucks, and are on track this year to sell as many, if not more.

Enid Mack Sales services mainly small- to mid-sized fleets, — 40 to 100 trucks — from Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas and Arkansas. Macks are unique, Phillips said, because they’re known for doing the “hard jobs.” Enid Mack Sales’ clients include oil field service companies, agriculture-related industries and feed haulers.

Prices for new Mack trucks range from $100,000 to $150,000. That’s nearly doubled since the business began, when Phillips said prices were about $45,000.

Business has been up-and-down in the 29 years of Enid Mack Sales’ existence. During the oil boom days, Phillips said they sold as many as 300 trucks a year. But in 1983, the selling “just quit” and didn’t pick up again until 2002 and 2003.

Through the difficult times, Phillips said loyal customers and employees helped the business.

Now is a “fantastic” time for the company, according to Phillips, with many opportunities for growth. They recently broke ground on a 12,000-square-foot expansion of their fabrication shop, a facet of Enid Mack Sales which brings in additional business. Phillips said they can fabricate equipment to go with trucks, including winches and vacuum tanks.

“We’ve created a really good reputation with our fabrication work,” Phillips said. “That’s equated into sales.”

In addition to selling trucks and fabricating equipment for them, Enid Mack Sales provides parts and service. They also have a 24-hour heavy-duty wrecker service.

Les Phillips started the company as part of a team, but when his partner dropped out shortly after the business venture began, he had to figure out how to make it work, his son said.

“He’s a bootstrapper,” Phillips said. “This business is one he enjoyed for so many years.”

Phillips began working at Enid Mack Sales in 1988, and worked side-by-side with his father for 17 years.

Les Phillips left the company in 2005, due to health reasons.

“This company is a testament to him,” Phillips said.
